Case Study: Recovering Valuable Powdered Tungsten at a GE Manufacturing Facility
Wet scrubber system installed.
Challenge
A GE incandescent lightbulb manufacturing facility faced a significant resource recovery challenge when valuable powdered tungsten accumulated throughout the plant. Tungsten is one of the world's most valuable industrial and critical minerals, widely used in aerospace, defense, electronics, cutting tools, and lighting applications. Recovering the material offered substantial economic value while reducing waste and improving housekeeping.
Despite having a $100,000 centralized vacuum system and bringing in a vacuum truck ("super sucker"), the dense tungsten powder could not be recovered effectively. The material remained throughout the facility, and conventional recovery methods failed to produce acceptable results.
"We're a resource recovery company. We selected two PLĒCO 30 HP portable vacuum systems configured for bulk pickup. Our customer just laughed at us when the Air Dynamics PLĒCO vacuums showed up. They actually said they'd never work! Although they laughed, that didn't phase us—we did our research and we had confidence in the Air Dynamics application engineer we worked with. The plant had a $100,000 central vacuum system; they even tried a 'super sucker' with no decent results. The company gave up trying to recover the powdered tungsten themselves. We had their plant cleaned up in record time, even though the powdered tungsten weighed approximately 1,150 pounds per cubic foot!"

The Solution
Air Dynamics engineered a specialized resource recovery solution using two PLĒCO™ 30 HP portable industrial vacuum systems configured specifically for bulk material recovery. Rather than relying on vacuum power alone, the system was engineered around the unique characteristics of powdered tungsten, allowing operators to recover one of the densest industrial materials safely and efficiently.
Results
The Air Dynamics resource recovery system successfully recovered more than eighty 55-gallon drums of powdered tungsten in record time after previous recovery attempts had failed. The project demonstrated that successful resource recovery depends on application-specific engineering rather than conventional vacuum equipment alone.
- Successfully recovered more than eighty 55-gallon drums of valuable powdered tungsten;
- Accomplished recovery after a centralized vacuum system and vacuum truck had failed;
- Reduced valuable material loss while supporting resource reclamation;
- Improved housekeeping and plant cleanliness; and
- Demonstrated the value of application-specific engineering for challenging resource recovery applications.
