DESERT WIND™ Portable Test Rig
This portable rig is designed to perform outdoor blowing sand or dust tests. The rig is customized to support the customer’s largest sized test item.
It provides an accurate & repeatable sand or dust concentration distribution using our proprietary nozzle injection process. Additional portable modules can be added to support wind velocity, temperature, and humidity requirements.

This concentration system is unique to the Desert Wind™ Patented design. It is the only system currently capable of providing a repeatable concentration of sand or dust via the test rig.
The United States Military and Commercial Manufacturers have been seeking the capability to simulate the conditions or environment found in the Desert. Conflict in desert areas require people and support equipment to operate in the harsh environment. The demands of the harsh environment require specialized equipment to simulate the deleterious effects of operating and storing equipment in the deserts of the world.
Until now, there has not been an environmental simulator that can provide real-time recorded outputs of each critical parameter of a blowing sand or blowing dust environmental simulator. The shortfalls are typically in the area of particle concentration, particle velocity, particle distribution and air velocity at the test chamber cross-sectional opening. Current equipment offered that comprises a closed loop with particulate circulating through the air mover yields itself to non-repeatability. This means the dust or sand concentration and particle distribution into the test chamber is continuously variable.
This shortfall in design points to the disclaimer in the FOREWORD section of the MIL-STD-810G document. “Therefore users should not assume that a system or component that passes laboratory tests of this standard also would pass field/fleet verification trials.” Of course this is true, if we lack quantification, then our test results are not predictable or repeatable. In essence, we run a different test each time.
The Desert Wind™ portable blowing sand and dust test rig can provide real-time data of each key test parameter while conducting the blowing test. We offer consistent, repeatable testing and offer additional modular units to adhere to the MIL-STD-810G, Method 510.4 that moves us towards predictive failure testing and analysis.

Portable Test Rig
The Desert Wind™ Portable Test Rig was designed to handle test items too large or expensive to be moved indoors for our standard chambers. The test rig offers the same consistent, accurate, and repeatable test capabilities in a mobile rig for on site testing.
Each rig can be complimented with modular additions to meet strict test standards such as MIL-STD-810G. The stand alone unit comes complete with automated controls and safety features designed to protect the operator while exponentially increasing the accuracy of the data provided.

PART 1 | The Desert Wind™ Blowing Sand & Dust Test Chamber is being prepared to test a specimen in accordance with MIL-STD-810G Method 510.4. The blowing dust test chamber exceeds the MIL-STD concentration standard by at least 92%. The system is fully automated using the latest Allen-Bradley PLC controls and software.
PART 2 | The Desert Wind™ Blowing Dust and Sand Environmental Test Chambers incorporate a rotating table. The feature allows remote positioning of the test specimen from the local operator console or via a remote operator console. Here, the specimen is verified to rotate freely.
PART 3 | Handling silica dust is serious business. Here, the blowing dust environmental simulator system is loaded or charged with silica dust using the built-in, automated system. This makes the process of handling silica safer and less labor intensive. The automated system is designed to comply with OSHA requirements for Industrial Ventilation as required by the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists and Part 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
PART 4 | Today’s laboratory environment requires automation in order to perform complex blowing dust and blowing sand testing. Yesterday’s hand written checklists no longer measure up to the world of technologically advanced environmental simulators such as the Desert Wind system. The fully automated test chamber produces 8640 data points in a typical 6 hour blowing dust test. In this video the test is started with a few operator inputs at the local touch screen or remotely via Ethernet.
